Historic Saranac Lake works to expand historic district

SARANAC LAKE — Historic Saranac Lake is working to expand the village’s downtown National Register district.

The Berkeley Green Historic District, originally listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1988, contained 26 buildings.

“The original district boundaries leave out a number of architecturally significant historic buildings,” HSL Director Amy Catania wrote in letter to the village Board of Trustees. “In 2016, we undertook this project to expand the boundaries in order to make the benefits of the National Register Listing more widely available to our historic downtown.”

The nomination includes buildings along Broadway, Main Street, Olive Street and Woodruff Street. For example, HSL is pushing to add the west side of Broadway, between Woodruff Street and the Saranac River, to the register. That would include the former Dew Drop Inn, where a renovation project recently stalled.

This designation, if approved, would not add any additional restrictions for building owners looking to make changes to their property, Catania said. It would make the properties applicable for state and federal historic preservation tax credits that can assist owners with building rehabilitation and grants for nonprofit groups. These properties would also go through a process of notice, review and consultation any time they’re affected by projects sponsored, licensed or assisted by a federal or state agency.

Using a Preserve New York Grant from the Preservation League of New York State, HSL contracted Adirondack Architectural Heritage to complete a survey of the historic properties in and around the Berkeley Square District.

Catania said the nomination is under review by the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and she expects to hear back before the end of the year.

HSL sent out fliers with more information to the owners of all 230 historic properties in Saranac Lake. In addition, it is holding an information session on April 23 at its Saranac Laboratory Museum, 89 Church St.

Starting at $19.00/week.
