Flames trapped man upstairs in Lyon Mountain house fire

LYON MOUNTAIN – Codi Smithers died in the house fire here early Sunday morning after getting trapped on the second floor of the home at 6 Second St.

His father, Christopher Smithers, suffered burns as he tried to rescue him.

Mr. Smithers called 911, telling dispatchers his son was trapped upstairs, Clinton County Office of Emergency Services Director Eric Day said in a press release.

Codi, 22, was found deceased in an upstairs bedroom, State Police said in a separate press release.

Clinton County Coroner David Donah responded and authorized the transport of his body to University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh.

Christopher, 49, sustained injuries in the fire. He was brought to CVPH for treatment of burns on his torso, face and hands.

State Police and county and state fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, the police release said.
