Tupper Lake mayor emphasizes home fire safety in cold weather

TUPPER LAKE — Village Mayor Paul Maroun wants Tupper Lakers to stay safe as they stay warm in the cold winter weather.

At Monday’s village board meeting, Maroun said that in light of recent reports of chimney fires, residents should keep their chimneys clean and make sure their detectors, both smoke and carbon monoxide, have charged batteries.

He also mentioned that houses need to be numbered for emergency services to find the site of the emergency, adding that a quick response can save someones life.

“The fire department and the rescue squad a few nights ago couldn’t find a house,” Maroun said.

He added that houses should not just have a wooden sign that can be hidden in the dark; they should have reflective signs.

Maroun said if somebody can’t afford a number or needs help installing one, they should call the fire department and will get one installed.
