SARANAC LAKE — With Aldi and the Lake Flower Tops closing, supermarket shoppers may soon need to find new spots to secure their groceries.

Aldi will close on Sunday for seven weeks as it moves next door, to a larger space that as of now stands as a steel frame on Will Rogers Drive. Tops will close later this fall as a result of larger bankruptcy filings, which saw the closing of 10 Tops stores. As of the time of publication, the owner of the plaza, Paolo Magro, said he is not ready to speak about current offers on the space.

Elinor Caton, from Saranac, who had just come from the Plattsburgh Aldi, said “We’re actually about to head up to the Aldi’s in Malone.” Caton said she shops at Aldi because they have “really basic products that are healthy and economical.” She said Aldi’s stock suits her family’s diet, which does not include many processed foods.

“My initial interest was the products that other stores don’t have,” Brenda Simoneau said. She said she lived in Germany for a time, and since Aldi is a German-owned brand, it often carries European products that other supermarkets just don’t have. “It interests me and still does.”

In other supermarket news, Nori’s Village Market is finishing up a renovation, and the remaining Tops supermarket on Church Street has a proposed $500,000 renovation in its future.

Tri-Lakes residents also get their groceries at Save-A-Lot and Shaheen’s IGA in Tupper Lake; Hannaford, Price Chopper, Green Goddess Natural Market and the Adirondack Corner Store in Lake Placid; and convenience stores such as Stewart’s Shops.
