Name change for football field?

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake High School football field could see a name change before the start of the school year.

At the Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education’s meeting Wednesday, the board proposed exploring the idea of changing the name of Ken Wilson Field to Wilson-Raymond Field in honor of John Raymond.

Raymond began his career in the school district in 1964. Over the years he served as dean of students, middle school principal, athletic director and district superintendent. However, coaching football is for what many remember him.

Raymond led Saranac Lake to multiple championship seasons, and he once took the then-Redskins football team to the state class C title game at the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University in 1995. Raymond retired from coaching in 1998 with 172 Section VII wins.

He died in 2016 at the age of 73.

Raymond’s name would share the field with Ken Wilson, a former Saranac Lake coach, principal and superintendent from the first half of the 20th century. In his first year coaching football, Saranac Lake shutout every opposing team. Wilson also led the team to seven Adirondack League championships. He died in 1972, and the field was named after him 1987.

A public hearing will be held on the matter at the board’s Aug. 22 meeting at 5 p.m. in the high school.

SLCD Superintendent Diane Fox said she thinks the public will be open with the name change.
