TUPPER LAKE — Village police are asking for the public’s help to find a man who they say robbed Ray’s Discount Liquor & Wine store Friday morning.

“We’re still following up on several hopeful leads that we’ve received,” Tupper Lake police Chief Eric Proulx said.

The man entered the store at 9:45 a.m., police said, wielding a knife and threatening Mary Chapman, 90, who owns the store. He held the knife to her back as she led him around the store, where he was captured on security cameras.

“She’s OK; she’s just really shook up,” Chapman’s daughter Tina Bradley said.

He fled on foot in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register and the bank box, police said. Chapman had just returned from the bank with cash when the man entered the store. She described the man as a professional, seeming to know what he was doing.

“I can’t say he was organized but he acted a little more than somebody off the street that just ran in to do a quick robbery,” Proulx said.

Bradley said he seemed to know there were cameras in the front of the store, but was unaware of ones in the back.

There have been break-ins at the store through the front and back doors and the front window, Bradley said, but always at night and never with a weapon.

Police described the suspect as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, with a slender build, weighing approximately 175 pounds. He was wearing a gray long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, red work gloves, a black New York Yankees ball cap and thick glasses.

Proulx said there were several witnesses outside who corroborated the timeline of events described by Chapman.

“Anyone that was in the area between Rite Aid and McDonald’s between 9:30 and 10 this morning, [if they saw anything] they consider to be out of the ordinary or just odd, however insignificant, they need to call us,” Proulx said. “A couple of things that were seen this afternoon that were thought as insignificant have actually aided us in moving a little bit forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tupper Lake village Police Department at 518-483-1219.
