Lake Placid Winter Carnival announces king, queen candidates

LAKE PLACID — Eight seniors have been chosen as the king and queen candidates for this year’s 75th annual Lake Placid High School Winter Carnival, which will be held from Feb. 1 to 3.

Below is a list of the candidates and their bios.

Camille Craig

Camille Craig is the daughter of Cay Craig of Upper Jay and Todd Craig of Manassas, Virginia. Her family includes her brothers Jordan, Austin, Carlton, Keaton, Stetson and Brenson and sister Lauren, and her cats, Racquette, Sparky, Zorro, Nala, Dash and Gus.

Camille was born in Watsontown, Pennsylvania and attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

She competes in soccer and basketball and enjoys cooking and playing the ukulele. She is also vice president of the National Honor Society, president of Travel Club, co-treasurer of the Environmental Club and a member of AWANA, a global nonprofit ministry.

Camille’s senior project highlights her interest in the French language and culture. She will be taking a week-long trip to Quebec City to participate in a culture immersion camp experience. Upon her return, she will be hosting a forum to engage her hometown community in French culture appreciation and language learning. She will also be using this experience to educate other students about French culture.

After graduation, Camille plans to pursue her interest in Environmental Science, French and playing soccer. She has an application pending at her top choice school, SUNY Potsdam.

Jennifer “Jenn” Godin

Jennifer “Jenn” Godin is the daughter of Deirdre and Darryl Godin of Lake Placid. Her family includes her brother Matt and sister Emily.

Jenn was born in Saranac Lake and attended elementary school at Petrova in Saranac Lake and the Lake Placid Elementary School. She competes in soccer and tennis and enjoys cooking, hanging out with friends and working out. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Science Olympiad Team.

Jenn’s senior project highlights helping victims of Hurricane Irma in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She is working with the organization, “Adopt a Family: USVI,” which assigns a donor a family, provides their story and a list of items they may need. Currently, she has “adopted” three families from Puerto Rico. She will be collecting donations to fill two boxes per family to send to them along with a personalized letter written in Spanish. After graduation, Jenn plans to pursue her interest in physics. She has been accepted to one of her top schools University of Buffalo, though she has not made a final decision.

Shelby Jewtraw

Shelby Jewtraw is the daughter of Andrea Gonyea of Saranac Lake and David Jewtraw of Lake Placid. Her family includes her stepfather Bob VanHouten, brothers Ryan Tummons, Noah Jewtraw and her late sister Gracee Jewtraw, a dog Moose and cats, Harry and Bauer.

Shelby was born in Plattsburgh and attended the Lake Placid Elementary School.

She competes in soccer, hockey and softball and enjoys hanging with friends. Shelby is also a member of Key Club and Varsity Club. Shelby’s senior project highlights the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. She plans to host a fundraiser dinner with the help of Sandy Huber, in which all proceeds will be used to purchase art supplies. These supplies will then be donated to UVM Children’s Hospital for their pediatric art room, which is used by children being treated there.

After graduation, Shelby plans to pursue nursing or health studies. She has applications pending at the following colleges: Utica, Siena, Le Moyne and Cortland.

Cadence Lewis

Cadence Lewis is the daughter of Travis Lewis and the late Bethany Talley, both of Lake Placid. Her family consists of her grandparents, Cal and Kathy Lewis, brothers Coleden and Ceatten, and dogs, Cassidy and Izzy.

Cadence was born in Saranac Lake and attended elementary school at Petrova in Saranac Lake and the Lake Placid Elementary School.

She competes in softball and enjoys “making people feel great about themselves.” Cadence’s senior project highlights her interest on the importance of drug awareness. She and Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw presented a drug awareness program to the Lake Placid High School. Cadence spoke about how drug overdoses have directly effected her life with the loss of her mother, Bethany Talley and grandmother, Kimberly Barney. She will also be presenting to Keene Central School in the near future.

After graduation, Cadence plans to pursue her interest in cosmetology. She will be working at Element Day Spa and Salon in Lake Placid with plans to pursue a degree in massage therapy at North Country Community College.

Colin Bentley

Colin Bentley is the son of Joseph and Jacquelyn Bentley of Wilmington. His family includes his sister Shannon Bentley. Colin was born in Saranac and attended Momot Elementary in Plattsburgh.

He competes in soccer, track and enjoys freestyle snowboarding. He is a member of the Environmental Club and the Science Olympiad team.

Colin’s senior project highlights his interest in snowboarding and skiing. He takes kids to Whiteface Mountain weekly and teaches them how to freestyle snowboard and ski, ensuring they have the proper form, skills and fun. After graduation, Colin plans to pursue his interest in the medical field. He has been accepted at SUNY Albany and has an application pending at Cornell University.

Zachary Lawrence

Zachary Lawrence is the son of David and Sabrina Lawrence of Wilmington. His family includes brother David Lawrence, his wife Liz and his dog, Hershey.

Zachary was born in Plattsburgh and attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

He enjoys skateboarding, snowboarding, coding, creating video games and solving Rubik’s cubes. He is a member of the Robotics Club.

Zachary’s senior project highlights his interest in computers. He will learn popular Adobe programs and use them to create a professional looking cinematic video, displaying the progress he made teaching people how to skateboard over the summer of 2017.

After graduation, Zachary plans to pursue his interest in coding and creating and developing online programs. He has applications pending at RIT and SUNY Canton.

Steven “Drew” Maiorca

Steven “Drew” Maiorca is the son of Steve and Buffy Maiorca of Lake Placid. His family includes his sister Taylor.

Drew was born in Plattsburgh and attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

He competes in golf and enjoys weightlifting.

Drew’s senior project highlights his interest in strength training for athletes. He will be shadowing the Head Strength and Conditioning coach at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. His goal is to acquire the knowledge needed to develop strengthening programs for any type of athlete.

After graduation, Drew plans to pursue his interest in the sport of golf. He plans to attend the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina his postgraduate year.

Jarell Paul

Jarell Paul is the son of Hasan Paul of Lake Placid and Rayna Begor of Plattsburgh. His family includes his stepmother Jasmine Paul, sisters Destinee, Lauryn, Taylor and Zaele and brother Amir.

Jarell was born in Saranac Lake and attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

He competes in soccer, basketball, track and field and enjoys longboarding and four-wheeling.

Jarell is also a member of the Connecting Youth and Community program.

After graduation, Jarell plans to pursue his interests in criminal justice or teaching. He has an application pending at SUNY Canton.
