Council to retire carbon credits
An Adirondack environmental group has won its bid to purchase carbon credits, all with the plan to retire the credits so fewer emissions get put into the atmosphere.
The Adirondack Council purchased the credits from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The initiative sells credits, mainly to power plants, with the end goal of reducing carbon emissions in the Northeast.
The Council won the bid for 2,000 credits and plans to retire them so that those emissions will not be allowed to happen.
The group is asking for donations to help support the purchase. It said in a press release that a donation of $25 equals a reduction of one ton of carbon.
Money from the auction goes to a nine-state regional coalition and is used to promote energy efficiency and green jobs.
