SARANAC LAKE — The Tri-Lakes Humane Society is also making a fundraiser of Floyd Lampart’s 4,000-mile bike ride.

The Saranac Lake animal shelter has set a goal of $2,000, with which it would put a roof over its outdoor dog yard. It has a donation page linked from its website, http://tlhsny.webs.com.

Lampart, of Lake Clear, is primarily riding to raise money for Best Friends Animal Society of Kenab. Utah, and its campaign to end euthanasia of pets by 2025. He didn’t mention the local shelter in a recent interview about his ride, but after Tri-Lakes Humane Society officials brought it up the Enterprise Tuesday, his wife Martha confirmed that he gave them permission to piggyback on his ride.

“Floyd has told them that if they wanted to use his bike ride to do something that they want to do, that’s fine,” Martha said.

In 2013, Floyd raised $17,000 for a fire suppression system at the Tri-Lakes Humane Society and more than $50,000 for laboratory equipment at Best Friends as he rode 11,346 miles around the perimeter of the continental U.S. Martha said no one at Best Friends said anything about sharing the fundraiser then, but this time, they took issue with other groups riding their coattails, especially using their data. That’s why Floyd hasn’t mentioned the local shelter this time around, Martha said.

Nevertheless, she added, both she and her husband want the best for the local shelter and therefore gave it permission to use his ride for its own fundraising, even if he doesn’t participate.

“Our animals come from there, too,” Martha said.

Floyd is riding from his home west and south to Colorado and Oklahoma, then back east to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he’ll finish at Best Friends’ annual conference.

He left on May 15 and is in Ohio now. Martha said he spent Tuesday night in a motel due to possible severe weather.
