Local RadioShack survives another closure wave

SARANAC LAKE — The only RadioShack in the Tri-Lakes area will remain open despite the chain announcing it will close 552 stores after filing for bankruptcy for the second time in two years.

Yes, there is an “Everything must go” sign on the front of the RadioShack in the Saranac Lake Shopping Center on Lake Flower Avenue, but the store is not closing, according to Store Manager Nora Donnelly and a list the company released. Donnelly said the reason for the sign is that her store needs to get rid of 62 boxes of inventory it just received from a store in Maine that is being closed.

The closures will affect 36 percent of RadioShack stores nationwide, according to Business Insider. The closest store closings will be in Clifton Park and Saratoga Springs.

The company said it will “continue to evaluate” the fate of its remaining 1,000 stores while the current closures will occur in two waves, with 187 closing immediately and another 365 closing by the first week of April.

The Saranac Lake store survived a similar wave of RadioShack closures two years ago. That time the chain shuttered 1,700 stores, including two in Plattsburgh and one in each of Malone, Potsdam and Massena. At the time, Saranac Lake store staff said business was good because it’s one of the only places to buy electronics in the Tri-Lakes area.

“It’s about the same now,” Donnelly said Tuesday. “The traffic has slowed down a little bit.” She attributed the dip to the company’s bankruptcy.
