Yarn shop asks people to knit for domestic violence victims

LAKE PLACID — Adirondack Yarns is partnering with the Stop Domestic Violence department within Children and Family Services in Plattsburgh to provide handmade items to women and children in Franklin, Essex and Clinton counties.

The local business is also reaching out to community members for their support to help survivors of domestic violence keep warm in winter.

Many of the women and children who benefit from these handmade goods have had to flee their homes to escape from domestic violence. Often they arrive at the Stop Domestic Violence department’s confidential emergency safe havens with only the clothes on their backs.

“I want everyone to feel included and a part of this, if they choose to participate,” said Dawn Smith, the knitting group’s contact with Children and Family Services. “It was just an idea I had. Women knitting for other women and children — how cool is that?”

Hand-knit or crocheted items in adult and children’s sizes could include hats, scarves, mittens, Afghans, baby blankets, toys and socks. If you’re unable to knit or crochet, donate yarn, and the knitting circle will make something for those in need. Drop off donations at Adirondack Yarns, 2241 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid. Though the need is heightened during winter, this is a year-round program.
