Tupper Lake to request parking use permit

Fire substation open house Saturday

TUPPER LAKE — Village officials will attend a joint planning board meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 28 to discuss a parking use permit the village filed for 56 Park St.

Mayor Paul Maroun said at Monday’s board meeting the village has drawn up a design, which will allow 11 parking spots on the left hand side of the lot with two in the back for the summer.

“The two in the back would be blocked in the winter for snowplowing and the first spot would be handicap accessible,” Maroun said.

The planning board is seeking a small bench on the front side of the handicap parking space with grass or a strip that matches the stamped concrete put in place this summer along the revamped Park Street, he said.

The village board approved two-hour parking between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the lot as well as lighting for the back end of the lot if the joint planning board authorizes the permit.

“There’s a power line that runs there and I don’t think it would be all that difficult to put a fixture on the pole,” village Clerk Mary Casagrain said.

The board also discussed the possibility of paving the lot next year upon approval of the planning board.

In addition, the board said the town of Santa Clara will host an open house Saturday to introduce the residents of the village to the new Santa Clara substation of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Fire Chief Carl Steffen said.

Steffen will be at the substation with members from 1 to 3 p.m. to answer any questions and give out applications to people who would like to join the station.

Steffen said the station has already ordered $9,000 in radio equipment.

Maroun added a warning about village resident’s taking precautions with fire safety during the winter months.

“It’s cold weather again,” he said. “Wood stoves are great, if they’re handled right and they’re clean and they’re proper. We’ve had a good couple of years; we haven’t had too, too many stove or chimney fires. Also carbon dioxide, if you have a unit, make sure the batteries are good and working properly, and if you don’t have it, you should have it.”
