ADK chapter offers scholarships for kids to attend DEC’s Camp Colby

SARANAC LAKE — The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) will sponsor two children, who would not otherwise be able to have a summer camp experience, to attend the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s environmental education camp on Lake Colby in Saranac Lake.

The scholarships are valued at $350 apiece.

Camp Colby is for young people between 11 and 13 years old. Campers choose from a variety of optional activities throughout the week that introduce them to outdoor pursuits and pastimes. Experiences include fishing, canoeing, archery and exploring a bog. There are several different week-long camp options throughout the summer.

To be considered for this scholarship opportunity, interested students should write a one-page essay titled “Why I’d Like to Attend Camp Colby.” They should include contact information: phone number, postal address, email and school attended. They should also include the name, phone number and email address of one teacher and one guidance counselor from their school. Applications may be emailed to jnm@clarkson.edu or mailed to Laurentian Chapter of the ADK, c/o Jeanna Matthews, 8 Clarkson Ave., MS 5815, Potsdam, NY 13699.

Applications should be postmarked by Dec. 24. Registration will open for the DEC camps on Jan. 25, 2017.
