Hikers were unprepared for winter conditions

A lost hiker and her dog, and three hikers who were not prepared for winter conditions were subjects of forest ranger rescues in the Adirondacks last week.

Town of North Elba

Three men from the Capital Region called for assistance after spending a night out camping near Mount Marcy on Friday, Oct. 25. The 29-year-old from Schenectady, a 26-year-old from Latham and a 22-year-old from Delanson had set out on an overnight camping trip but told Essex County 911 that they were “very cold and unprepared for winter conditions.”

DEC dispatch established text contact with the trio and directed them to Marcy Dam. Rangers met them about 3 miles from the dam, where they were warmed. Rangers then assisted the men to Adirondak Loj, where the men declined further medical treatment, against the advice of rangers.

Town of Hope

A 25-year-old woman from Colonie was reported overdue from a hiking trip on Oct. 25. The woman’s family called 911 when she failed to return. They did not know where she had gone hiking.

Forest rangers and state police searched for her vehicle in the Stony Creek area and on additional trails in Hamilton and Saratoga counties. Her car was found just before 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Hope Falls trail.

Two rangers and a state police helicopter searched for the woman before she was found at the Wilcox Lake Outlet.

The woman had taken a wrong turn while hiking the day before and decided to spend the night when darkness set in. She walked out but at a slow pace because her dog was having trouble walking.
