CORTLANDT (AP) – State troopers say a moose had to be put down over the weekend after it had been hit by a car in one of New York City’s northern suburbs.

The Journal News reports the moose was hit and seriously hurt on Saturday in the Westchester County town of Cortlandt, 35 miles north of New York City.

A state police spokeswoman says troopers found the animal around noon that day near U.S. Route 9 but were unable to find the driver responsible. Troopers euthanized the moose.

The spokeswoman says she didn’t know whether it was the same moose that had been seen earlier this summer in Cortlandt and nearby Bedford and Ossining.

Wildlife experts estimate there are between 500 and 800 moose in New York state, but that they typically stay near the Adirondacks.
