ALBANY (AP) – Leaf-peeping season is running a little behind schedule this year.

Observers for Empire State Development’s I Love New York program say changes are just beginning in the Adirondacks. They expect a 30 percent change this weekend in the Tupper Lake area and up to 25 percent around Lake Placid.

For most of the rest of the state, changes in color range from 10 to 20 percent.

The warm, dry summer has been a factor and could lead to less brilliant colors in some of the region. Leaves already have begun falling without changing colors, which happens when it’s abnormally dry.

A widespread frost was expected early Sunday, and that normally speeds color change. So far, only a small part of the northern Adirondacks has seen a frost.
