People of Port Henry vote to dissolve

Residents of Port Henry voted Tuesday to go ahead and dissolve their village government.

The Essex County village had a population of fewer than 1,200 as of the 2010 census, and a solid turnout – one in three total residents – came out to vote in the referendum. The village dissolution passed narrowly, with 52.5 percent of voters casting their ballots to dissolve. The final vote tally was 208 to 188.

Voters previously voted last October to dissolve the village. Five years earlier, they had voted to keep the village.

Tuesday’s result means Port Henry will transfer its operations and assets to the town of Moriah, ceasing to exist after March 31, 2017.

The village of Port Henry was incorporated in 1869.
