Forest rangers rescue hikers

State forest rangers are responsible for locating and assisting lost and injured people on both public and private land in New York. These rescues occurred in the last week in the Adirondacks.

Town of Lake George

Two hikers from Brooklyn became lost while hiking Prospect Mountain in Lake George early on the afternoon of July 18.

The 31-year-old man and 30-year-old woman followed a herd path and could not find their way back. Forest rangers located the pair and escorted them to their car in good health.

Town of Watson

Lewis County 911 requested help from Department of Environmental Conservation dispatch in Ray Brook when four teenagers from Turin became lost while hiking the evening of July 18.

The three males and one female became lost while hiking to Gleasman Falls. Two forest rangers responded, and located the group shortly after 11 p.m. The rangers escorted the group, who were in good condition, to their car at 1:08 a.m. the following morning.

Town of Brighton

An Akwesasne man became separated from his group at the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center on the afternoon of July 19.

Members of the man’s group, VIC staff and Paul Smith’s College security officers searched for two hours before requesting assistance in finding the 34-year-old.

Rangers responded and were able to make contact with the man via cellphone, even though there was limited service. The man was instructed to call 911 to provide GPS coordinates, after which the rangers were able to locate the man. He was escorted to the main VIC building and reunited with the rest of his group at 5:15 p.m.

Town of Arietta

An 81-year-old man became lost while hiking on July 20, and wasn’t located until July 22.

Forest rangers in a state police helicopter, along with search volunteers and the Fulton County and Hamilton County sheriffs’ offices began searching the area around where the man’s car was found.

The helicopter crew spotted the man shortly after noon on July 22, and were able to land in a nearby marsh. The man was taken by helicopter to the Piseco airport, and the Piseco volunteer ambulance corps took him to an area hospital for treatment.

Town of Keene

Early in the afternoon of July 22, a 20-year-old woman from Hanibal requested help due to medical distress near the summit of Giant Mountain.

Rangers responded and stabilized the woman. They escorted her to her vehicle, where she said she would seek medical treatment on her own.

Town of Keene

A 20-year-old man from Montclair, New Jersey, reported that he needed help due to medical distress at a Flowed Lands lean-to.

A forest ranger, along with the Lake Colden interior caretaker, located and stabilized the man, who was then escorted to the Lake Colden Interior Outpost to spend the night.

Rangers escorted him out of the backcountry the following morning.

Town of Indian Lake

A 51-year-old man from Hudson Falls became lost while hiking the Rock River trail in the Blue Mountain Wild Forest on Saturday, July 23.

A ranger located the man and escorted him to his vehicle in good health.

Town of Tupper Lake

The Raquette Falls Outpost caretaker requested help for a 14-year-old girl from Danbury, Connecticut the afternoon of July 24.

The girl was stabilized by members of her hiking party, and forest rangers responded to help the girl out to a waiting Tupper Lake ambulance for transport to an area hospital for treatment.

Town of North Elba

The Mount Marcy summit steward notified DEC dispatch of a missing hiker on the afternoon of July 24.

A special-needs man became separated from his hiking partner at the Mount Van Hovenberg and Hopkins Mountain trail junction.

An assistant forest ranger located the missing man, and escorted him to the trailhead. Rangers then took the man to Adirondak Loj, where he was reunited with his partner.
