DEC plans new trail near Newcomb

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has planned a new multi-use trail in the 92,000-acre Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest.

The Newcomb to Minerva multi-use trail would be located along state Route 28N, near the Boreas River. The trail will be about one mile in length.

According to the DEC’s environmental notice bulletin, the trail will be located within a half-mile of the river, which is designated as a Scenic River. DEC estimates that the trail will occupy a total of 1.1 acres over its length.

The ENB notice says “the proposed activity is not in an area of identified archaeological sensitivity and no known registered, eligible or inventoried archaeological sites or historic structures were identified or documented for the project location.”

The DEC is accepting comments on the proposed trail until July 14. To submit comments, email them to DEP.R5@dec.ny.gov, or send them to Marc Migliore, NYSDEC Region 5, Warrensburg Sub-Office, 232 Golf Course Road, Warrensburg, NY 12885.
