River cleaned up

SARANAC LAKE – For the first time in several years, volunteers gathered to pick garbage out of the Saranac River.

Numerous volunteers started downtown in the Dorsey Street parking lot and drifted downstream in canoes provided by local outfitters.

St. Regis Canoe Outfitters, the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters organized the event.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation provided a dump truck and trailer to hold the garbage and disposed of the tires, street cones, plates, mugs, dishes, a guitar, a walker, a baby stroller and shopping carts.

Coakley High Peaks Ace Hardware provided work gloves for volunteers, and Tops, Hannaford and Price Chopper all pitched in food for a barbecue afterward.
