Park St. roadwork will shift to grading, drainage

TUPPER LAKE – This week’s work on Park Street will concentrate on grading and installation for drainage and curbing in the state’s Department of Transportation’s reconstruction of this part of Route 3.

This news came as part of a progress update from Tom Maroun, the engineer leading the overhaul of Tupper Lake’s main commercial street. He said a troublesome lack of drainage on the hill by Chaney Avenue should soon be resolved, and several subcontractors are scheduled to come this week for other advancements.

According to the update, the drainage pipe up the hill to Chaney Avenue has taken longer than expected due to the mass of rock to blast and excavate. Drainage at the bottom of the hill was also a problem Wednesday evening, as the drains were raised above street level and a pool of water shut the street down after a flash of heavy rain. State and village workers worked together to drain the water and reopen the road.

The subcontractor Stilsing Electric from Rensselaer is working on new signal foundations, pull boxes and conduit to prepare for a new signal at the intersection of Mill and Park streets.

Rock drilling for a retaining wall at the corner of Hill and Park streets is complete, and workers will soon begin constructing the wall. Once that is complete, Hill Street is expected to reopen after being closed since the second bout of rain damage on June 6.

On July 5 subcontractor A & K Slipforming from Cobleskill will begin curb installation from Cliff Avenue to the front of Little Italy, which is expected to take up to four days, weather permitting.

Maroun said the business district is still scheduled to be paved with asphalt by mid-July if weather doesn’t set the project back.
