Music store move inspired First Night button art

SARANAC LAKE – This year’s First Night Saranac Lake button design is a reworking of a banner Britt (Clark) Sternberg created for the annual New Year’s Eve festival in 2012.

Every year, First Night Saranac Lake commissions volunteers to design and paint six canvas banners which then adorn the facade and the main stage of the Harrietstown Town Hall on New Year’s Eve. Thereafter, the six join the cache of banners from previous First Nights that are considered annually as the basis for the following year’s admission button.

This year’s button shows a crowd of people carrying musical instruments, including guitars and a keyboard. Sternberg’s banner was inspired by her teenage years working for Mark Coleman at Ampersound music store. There, she said, she gained an understanding of the value of the music store to this community, along with insights and experience that helped her grow during those years. Specifically, the incident that inspired her banner happened one morning when, while getting ready for work, she glanced out her Broadway apartment window and saw a bucket brigade of people moving products from Ampersound’s old location on Woodruff Street to its new location on Main Street.

First Night organizers said they are proud to highlight that experience as an example of community on this year’s button.

Buttons are the admission tickets to all 10 First Night venues hosting a total of 17 performers, each doing at least two 45-minute sets every hour on the hour between 6 p.m. and midnight. Buttons can be purchased in advance for $12 or for $15 on the day of the event, Dec. 31. Children 12 and under are admitted free and will be given a special children’s button at the venues. Teen buttons will be available for $7 on the day of the event only, and only at the Harrietstown Town Hall, 39 Main St.

Advance buttons are on sale at the following locations through Dec. 30: Ampersound, Blue Line Sports, Adirondack Daily Enterprise, the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Coakley High Peaks Ace Hardware in Saranac Lake, and in Lake Placid at Price Chopper and the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau.

On Dec. 31, button will only be available for purchase at the town hall and Ampersound. First Night headquarters will be in the town hall on the day of the event.

First Night ends with a snowflake drop at midnight, followed by fireworks over Lake Flower.
