Hochul press secretary resigns amid harassment accusations
ALBANY — Avi Small, Gov. Kathy. Hochul’s press secretary, has resigned from his position after allegations of sexual harassment were made against him.
Confirmed by an official in her office, Small stepped down from his post on July 4. He’d been suspended from Hochul’s office since June 25, for an incident that is alleged to have occurred at a downtown Albany bar on June 16.
Reporting from outlets including the New York Times, Politico and WNYC’s Gothamist indicated that Small had been previously investigated for creating a hostile workplace and berating former staffers. The more recent complaint alleged that Small had inappropriately touched another staff member.
Hochul has taken steps to reform the culture of the Executive Chamber, after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned amidst a cloud of scandals including multiple credible claims of sexual harassment. She stood up an internal complaint system, a new HR department for the office and an outside attorney to investigate claims of harassment, assault or other workplace violations. That firm, Calcagni Kanefsky, LLP., was investigating the recent allegations when Small resigned — the status of that investigation isn’t clear.
