The Community String Orchestra of the Adirondacks will perform a concert following the evolution of occidental music from the cradle to the 21st century, according to the orchestra’s executive director, Dorit Gaedke.

Two performances are scheduled:

¯ Wednesday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m., Saranac Village at Will Rogers, in Saranac Lake.

¯ Thursday, June 20 6 p.m. at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

Conducted by Artistic Director Alex Malin, the concert will start with a nursery rhyme, the earliest form of musical expression, and will be followed by a folk tune from Scotland. These two tunes allow all players to partake. From there the concert will move to a glorious Renaissance piece, a Gregorian Chant (“Terribilis est Locus Iste” and “Nuper Rosarum Flores”) in an arrangement for string orchestra by Malin.

A highlight of the Baroque era is the JS Bach Violin Concerto for two solo violins, string orchestra and harpsichord in three movements. This will be performed by six soloists (two per movement), five professionals and a high school student looking at a career in music, and will be supported by John Curtis, a much sought after harpsichord, organ and piano player. This concert is underwritten by the Essex County Arts Council.

Joseph Haydn is a classical composer who has written a proliferative number of symphonies. The orchestra picked No. 30 for the performance, the “Allelujah Symphony.” They have invited their wind player friends, and the audience will see 10 violins, four violas, six celli and a great bass on stage together with a quartet of recorder players, two flutes, two clarinets, a trumpet and a French horn.

The tie to the modern times is an arrangement of the “Song of Peace” from Finlandia, a Romantic symphonic work by Jean Sibelius. Then they will move on to Lindsey Stirling. Elizabeth Izzo of Lake Placid will solo on “The Song of the Caged Bird,” accompanied by a quiet string orchestra “Wall of Sound.”

The concerts are free, and a voluntary donation suggested and appreciated.
