And now … the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Court of 2021

(Photos provided)

James Carpenter, chamberlain

James Carpenter is originally from outside New York City, having grown up on the mean streets of Scarsdale. His love for the Adirondacks was inspired by years spent at a small summer camp on Upper Saranac Lake. In 2003 he moved with his family to Lake Clear. Before becoming a teaching assistant at the high school, James has had a myriad of jobs including limousine company owner, social studies teacher, copier salesman, stay-at-home dad and tele-evangelist. He is the father of Charlie (TA extraordinaire in the elementary school) and Maggie (college sophomore at the University of Rochester), and rides the coattails of his wife Laura, who is a scientist. He is a graduate of both St. Lawrence University and Fordham University. He is a proud member of the Elks and has been the master of ceremonies on Trivia Night at the Elks club for the past 23 years, with the help of his good friend Tyler Chase. When not working at the high school, James enjoys hiking, kayaking, skiing and water polo. Mostly, he is both flattered and honored to be this year’s chamberlain.

Paul Giroux, archbishop

Originally from Hinesburg, Vermont, Paul Giroux spent 14 years living in Bradenton, Florida, and earned a Finance degree from the University of Florida. After being in the business world for only two years, Paul felt that his work was not fulfilling enough, so he moved to upstate New York to be closer to family and to switch careers. He enrolled at SUNY Plattsburgh and majored in Secondary Education, Mathematics. There he met his future bride Michelle, who was majoring in special education. A phone call from Dr. Warner Houth to Mr. John Raymond secured Paul an interview for a mathematics teaching position at Saranac Lake Middle School. John Raymond offered Paul the job of eighth-grade math teacher in the fall of 1997, and he graciously accepted. Paul’s two passions were teaching and basketball. Paul coached on and off at the junior varsity and modified levels, and also helped start Saranac Lake Youth Basketball with Becky LaDue. During this time, Paul and Michelle were also raising their lovely daughters, Haley and Jennifer. After five years at the middle school, Paul wanted to better utilize his natural talent of making hard math seem easy, so he moved over to the high school to teach his favorite class, Algebra 2/Trigonometry. Paul truly believes that he has the best job in the world, and he couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Paul felt honored when the 2021 seniors nominated him to be the archbishop of this year’s Winter Carnival Court.
