LAKE PLACID – Upon Lake Placid Elementary School fifth graders finishing a math unit on fractions, the students broke up into teams of four and had to double a pie crust and pie filling recipe at the Lake Placid Conference Center on “Pi Day,” March 14. The objective of this project is to have students learn and understand real life applications for what they are doing in the classroom. Not only did this project include real-life applications of math, but students had to apply teamwork skills, and creativity in order to be successful making the pies. The pies turned out to be a big hit with the state Olympic Regional Development Authorit and Center Plate employees, as well as the faculty and staff from Lake Placid Elementary School. The school gives a big thank-you to the Lake Placid Conference Center and Center Plate, which donated their time, event space, and ingredients for the students to accomplish all of this.
