Cuomo: Regulatory commission must pay for NY flooding costs

ALBANY (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo threatens action against an international body that regulates waterways between the United States and Canada if it doesn’t reimburse his state for costs linked to record flooding around Lake Ontario.

The governor says the International Joint Commission took little preventative action after the 2017 floods, and recent high waters from a massive snowpack and spring rains have again damaged homes, businesses and property.

The governor wants the commission to maximize outflows that drain flooded areas. He says New York spent more than $100 million for shoreline repairs after 2017, and tens of millions after this year’s flooding from the highest waters in about a century. The commission says any rise in the water level is now expected to be minor or even decline.
