Sean Doherty scored his first World Cup points of the season Friday with a 22nd-place finish in the men’s 10-kilometer biathlon sprint race at the IBU World Cup event in Hochfilzen, Austria. Doherty went 10-for-10 on the shooting range as he finished 1 minute, 39.2 seconds back of winner Johannes Thingnes Boe of Norway.

  “I am very happy with my race today,” said Doherty, who hails from Center Conway, New Hampshire. “It’s very rewarding when it comes together on the range. I’m looking forward to starting in the thick of the pursuit tomorrow.”

Joining Doherty in todfay’s 12.5k pursuit will be Lowell Bailey, of Lake Placid, who placed 53rd with two penalties, 2:32.4 off the pace. Other American finishers were Tim Burke, of Paul Smiths,in 73rd, Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minnesota) in 98th and Paul Schommer (Appleton, Wisconsin) in 103rd.

The tracks were hard and fast for the men’s race early in the day with the temperature at the freezing mark for the start and the wind perfectly still. Most of the top men started in the second group, expecting the tracks to get faster as the competition progressed.

Boe shot clean for his second win of the new season, taking the men’s sprint in 24:18.4. He finished 12.1 seconds ahead of Martin Fourcade of France who also shot clean but could not match the track speed of the Norwegian. Third place went to Jakov Fak of Slovenia, matching Boe and Fourcade on the shooting range, but finishing 35.4 seconds back.

Conditions changed drastically for the women’s 7.5k sprint held a few hours after the men’s race. Moderate to heavy snow began falling minutes before the start. Initially the snow was wet, but as the temperature dropped, it turned drier and intensified. Shooting became more complicated as the falling snow dropped the visibility and the wind picked up considerably from the left side of the range.

Despite the weather challenges, Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was able to secure her first World Cup points of the year as well as a berth in today’s 10k pursuit with a 35th-place finish. Egan had two penalties on the range in a race that saw only eight of the 102 finishers shoot clean. Her time was 1:56.1 off the first-place time set by Darya Domracheva of Belarus.

Domracheva was one of the eight women to shoot clean on the range, finishing with the best time of 22:40.2. She was 22.1 seconds ahead of Anastasiya Kuzmina of Slovakia, who finished second with one penalty. Third place went to Italy’s Dorothea Wierer, with one penalty, 30.6 seconds behind.

Rounding out the U.S. team in the women’s sprint were Emily Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vermont) in 89th and Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vermont) in 97th.

The World Cup in Hochfilzen continues today with the men’s and women’s pursuits. NOTE: By virtue of his top-30 finish in Friday’s sprint, Doherty has achieved the performance requirement for a nomination to the Olympic Team. The window for achieving the performance requirement remains open through World Cup 3 next week, with the full Olympic Team roster being announced on Jan. 15.
