WEST CHAZY — The Saranac Lake volleyball team’s hopes of earning the program’s first-ever state playoff victory fell short on Wednesday evening, as the Red Storm suffered a 3-1 loss to the Ichabod Crane Riders in the NYSPHSAA Class B subregional round.
Playing at Beekmantown High School, the Section 2 champion, Riders, won by scores of 22-25, 25-14, 25-9 and 25-18. Saranac Lake had rallied from 10 points down in the opening set to secure a win; however, Ichabod Crane took control from that point on to seal the match.
The Red Storm’s Lexie Donaldson paced her team with a double-double, recording 10 digs and 10 points to go along with her four aces and four kills. The team’s libero, Rori Chenaille-Schenk, added 30 digs, seven points and two aces.

Meanwhile, three seniors — Foster, Melody Costigan and Sophia McBride — wrapped up their varsity volleyball career on Wednesday.
Ichabod Crane, which improved to 15-8 overall, advanced to the NYSPHSAA regional round where it will take on Section III’s champions, Westhill, at Skaneatles High School at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Westhill defeated the Section X, Class B champion, Ogdensburg Free Academy, 3-0 on Tuesday.
