Storm, Bombers put together dominant meet
WESTPORT — The Saranac Lake and Lake Placid cross country teams put together another standout meet on Tuesday at the Westport Golf Course.
The Red Storm girls completed another sweep, to remain unbeaten in league racing, and while Lake Placid’s girls only had four runners, Leila Fey set a course record en route to another individual win.
Saranac Lake and Lake Placid’s boys squads also swept the meet, earning wins over Moriah Boquet Valley, Ticondeorga and Seton Catholic. The two area teams did not race against each other.
The Blue Bombers’ Fey, an eighth-grader, won the girls’ race in 18 minutes, 52 seconds, breaking the previous record of 20:27 set by Saranac Central’s Sienna Boulds. Teammate Norah Francis finished right behind in 20:23 for second place.
After those two finished, five Red Storm girls runners closed out the day with Asa Bruno (21:05) leading the way in third place. Saranac Lake’s Clementine Guenette (21:19) placed fourth overall, and FinLee Orapallo (21:24) was fifth.
Pepper Laxson (22:00) and Cadence Kennedy (22:01) rounded out the Red Storm’s scorers in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
The Red Storm girls, which is now 13-0, had 11 runners crack the top-15 en route to a 15-50 win over both Moriah Boquet Valley and Ticonderoga and a 15-48 victory over Seton Catholic.
The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Holly Ernstone (23:17) in 11th and Rose Wenzler (27:16) in 22nd. Seton Catholic’s Evelyn Palma (22:15) was the only non-Tri-Lakes runner inside the top-15 in the girls race.
However, on the boys side, Seton Catholic’s Colby Chase was the top finisher, crossing the finish line in 16:36, which was also a course record. The previous best was set by Saranac Central’s Noah Thayer in 17:29.
Saranac Lake’s Keaton Daley placed third in 17:25, and teammate Emmett VanBuskirk also cracked the top three with a third-place finish in 17:34. Ticonderoga’s James DeFranco (18:05) was his team’s top finisher, placing fourth, while the Blue Bombers’ Graham Scull (18:11) was fifth.
Both Saranac Lake and Lake Placid earned 15-50 wins over Moriah Boquet Valley, since they had an incomplete team. The Red Storm also earned a 20-43 win over Seton Catholic and a 21-36 victory over Ticonderoga. The Blue Bombers topped Seton Catholic 20-43 and beat Ticonderoga 23-24.
The Red Storm had two other runners place inside the top-10 as Ebin Meissner (18:14) earned sixth and Rowan Popp (18:14) placed seventh. Ben Ziemann (19:13) and Colin Glascock (19:16) also had solid finishes, placing 14th and 15th, respectively.
Lake Placid’s boys had solid finishes from Jim Gugliemi in eighth place in 18:26, Doug Gugliemi in ninth in 18:39 and Connor Mannion in 10th in 18:40
The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Jesse Carlson (19:33) in 17th, Will Preece (19:53) in 19th, Sam Skutt (19:59) in 20th, Tyler Erenstone (20:26) in 25th and Asher Murray (25:55) in 41st.
Up next, the Saranac Lake and Lake Placid cross country teams will race again at AuSable Valley Central School at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The meet will also feature host AuSable Valley and Saranac Central.
