Red Storm girls soccer tie Ti

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team tied the Ticonderoga Sentinels 1-1 on Thursday evening.

Ava Belden gave the host Sentinels a 1-0 lead in the first half off an assist from Natalie Cook.

“We came out and had some shots and possessed the ball, but Ti, once again, broke us down and scored the first goal,” Saranac Lake’s head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “We lost our marks and got caught watching the ball.”

The Red Storm’s Wren Crist evened the game after sending a cross pass from Brisa Brunette into the back of the net.

“We moved some players around to mix up the style and speed of play and tried to create mismatches. Wren’s goal was just that,” Wamsganz said. “Brisa sent a nice ball in front, and Wren timed it perfectly, changing speed to put it in. I thought Maggie (Reynolds) was a threat from the outside, using her speed and Tyler (Burth) distributed the ball well and both really helped to create more chances for us.”

Saranac Lake finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots, as the team’s goalie, Emma Akey, had seven saves. Ticonderoga’s MJ Drinkwine had eight.

“The girls settled in and picked up their marks and really did a nice job of limiting chances and responding,” Wamsganz said. “We made some adjustments on D going into the game and the girls really did a nice job of executing and keeping (Addie) Munson’s chances limited. She (Munson) split us once, but outside of that, we really stayed on the goal side and kept her mostly outside. Credit Layne (Locke) and Kelsi (Burth) for much of that, along with Ellie (Willett).”

The Red Storm, which are now 2-6-2 overall, will host back-to-back games, starting with the Moriah Vikings at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, before taking on the Boquet Valley Griffins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Starting at $3.92/week.
