Sentinels top Red Storm girls soccer
SARANAC LAKE — Despite outshooting its opponents, the Saranac Lake girls soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to the Ticonderoga Sentinels on Friday afternoon at home.
Tyler Burth scored the lone goal for the Red Storm, who drop to 2-5-1 overall, and have lost four straight, all of which have come in close games. Saranac Lake’s head coach Jason Wamsganz said the last three have been very tough losses.
“No loss is easy, but some sting more than others,” he said. “I felt like we controlled the entire game today, except for the score. When you outshoot and outpossess the other team by a large margin, it usually results in a win; that wasn’t the case today. I feel really badly for these girls, they are a good team, they work hard and they deserve a win.”
Saranac Lake outshot the Sentinels 11-4, but seemingly couldn’t find the back of the net. Its opponent did as Addie Munson led Ticonderoga with two goals — one in each half. Maggie Price also scored.
“The Munson girl is fast and was good with finishing her opportunities,” Wamsganz said. “We have to really focus on not giving up goals inside of 5 minutes to a half or a game. That’s been a downfall of ours.”
Price’s goal, which was essentially the game-winner, came on a penalty kick with less than one minute remaining in the first half.
“I felt like we were tripped in possession of the ball inside of the box and they called an obstruction,” Wamsganz said. “That was a bit frustrating, but then we committed a foul inside of our box and it resulted in a PK goal for them; a tough swing, but that’s the way it is and it’s our responsibility to respond.”
Saranac Lake’s goalies Emma Akey and Brylee Carter combined for three saves. Ticonderoga’s MJ Drinkwine had nine saves.
“Our overall team play was incredible tonight, very unselfish and we really did a nice job of moving the ball,” Wamsganz said. “I thought that Layne Locke and Ellie Willett played really well defensively, Kelsi (Burth) had a nice all-around game. Brylee had to step in, and she did a nice job. Tyler started to make some good runs without the ball, and that resulted in a goal for her. Moving forward, she knows that she is going to be double-teamed, so movement off the ball for her is going to be critical. I really was pleased with each girl tonight.”
Up next, the Red Storm will travel north to Ellenburg Depot to face the Northern Adirondack Bobcats at 4:30 p.m. today.
