LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid track and field teams secured a sweep over the Ticonderoga Sentinels on Tuesday afternoon on the team’s home track.
The Blue Bomber girls won eight out of the 14 events — two were uncontested — to earn a 62-39 victory over the Sentinels, while Lake Placid’s boys narrowly edged out Ticonderoga with a 56-53 win.
Leila Fey paced the Blue Bomber girls with two individual wins in the 400- and 800-meter events. Teammates Jenna Fay, Ashe Gagnon, Holly Erenstone and Kai McKinnon also won an individual event. Fay won the 1,500, Gagnon claimed the 400 hurdles, Erenstone won the 3,000 and McKinnon took home the discus title.
Lake Placid’s girls also swept the relay events, claiming the 4×800 and the 4×100-meter events. Meanwhile, the 4×100 was uncontested.
Ticonderoga’s Isabelle Burroughs had a standout performance, winning four individual events. Burroughs won the high jump, triple jump, shot put and 100 hurdles. Her teammate, Kylie Bowman, won the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

On the boys side, the Blue Bombers won seven events as senior Aidan Fay led the way with three individual distance event wins. Fay won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races.
Lake Placid’s Trey Mariano and Kenny Lawrence were victorious on Tuesday. Mariano won the 400, while Lawrence took home the long jump crown. The Blue Bombers claimed the 1,600 and 3,200 relay events. The Sentinels won the 400-meter relay.
Ticonderoga’s Brady Leerkes and Cameron Bennett won two individual events each. Leerkes won the 100 and 200 events, while Bennett won the 400-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Tyler McTier and Ryan Cook swept the throwing events, taking respective firsts in the shot put and discus.
Lake Placid will travel for its next two meets, starting today at Beekmantown against both the Eagles and Northeastern Clinton, before heading to Plattsburgh on Tuesday for a dual meet against Seton Catholic and AuSable Valley. The Blue Bombers will wrap up the regular season with a home meet against Saranac Lake at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22.

After posting some solid results as of late, the Saranac Lake boys and girls track teams were swept by the Beekmantown Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at home.
The Beekmantown boys topped the Red Storm 84-47, while Saranac Lake’s girls squad suffered an 87-45 loss to the Eagles.
The Red Storm boys were riding a bit of a high heading into Tuesday’s meet, having won 13 out of 16 events against AuSable Valley in their last meet, while having a solid outing at the Jack V. Irion Queensbury Invitational this past weekend. Red Storm boys head coach Cy Ellsworth said the team had hit “some real good numbers all across the board.”
“Tonight, however, showed our lack of depth,” he said. “Jake (Kollmer) got sick after the 1,600, Liam (Nobles) is nursing a back strain and we didn’t have a high jumper to compete tonight so we left a lot of points out on the track.”
Nobles still won three individual events in the 200-meter, long jump and triple jump. Kollmer also won the 1,600-meter race. Dustin Burke, a senior, swept the throwing events — shot put and discus — for Saranac Lake.
Despite falling short, Ellsworth said he was proud of how some of the younger athletes stepped up.
“Athletes like Austin Webb Brown (a freshman) running a 12 flat in the 100, Emmett Van Buskirk (a junior) in the 3,200 and 400 hurdles, Sam Duprey (a sophomore) in the shot put and Brandon McGinnis-Theis (a sophomore) in the discus,” he said. “They are young and they all hit (personal records) and scored us some points.”
On the girls side, Maggie Reed paced Saranac Lake with three individual event wins. Reed, a senior, won the 100 hurdles, the high jump and the triple jump. Gracen Foster, a junior, also won an individual event, claiming the shot put event.
Saranac Lake’s girls head coach Jason Wamsaganz said his team had a solid performance on Tuesday, especially after a long day of competition at the invitational this past Saturday.
“It isn’t always easy running hard at an invite and then turning around and competing against a good team like Beekmantown, just a few days later,” he said. “I could tell that we had some heavy legs coming off from the weekend, but that was expected.”
While the team won had just four first-place finishes out of the 16 events, Wamsganz noted that his team still posted solid results.
“Addison Ash had two seconds and a third (place finish),” he said. “Pepper Laxson had a really solid performance in the mile with a second and Cadence Kennedy took second in the 3,000. Maggie Reynolds placed second in the 800. Zu Oliveras and Georgia McMinn turned in great performances as well.”
The Red Storm track teams will host Moriah/Boquet Valley at 4:30 p.m. today. Following that, the teams will travel to Northeastern Clinton on Tuesday and Lake Placid on Thursday, May 20, to close out the regular season.
“Our goal is to win all three (meets) heading into sectionals,” Wamsganz said. “We talk about the lull of midseason, so our focus has to be on our energy and preparation.”
