Storm hitters stung by Hornets

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake baseball team ended its season in the Section VII, Class B semifinal game on Monday. The Red Storm were defeated by the Plattsburgh Hornets 9-5 in Plattsburgh.

Saranac Lake got off to a 2-0 start in the first inning, but Plattsburgh slowly mounted the comeback with one run in both the second and third inning to tie the game.

With the game tied at 2-2, the Hornets delivered the big blow, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning. The Red Storm scored one run in the sixth and two in the top of the seventh but were unable to come back.

Cedar Rivers and Zyler Strack led Saranac Lake’s nine-hit performance with two hits each. Plattsburgh was led by Dom DeAngelo and Braden Calkins, who had three hits each. Jace Lacey and Mike Phillips recorded two hits each in the win.

“I am proud of how we battled all game long and ended up coming out on top against a talented Saranac Lake team,” Hornets head coach Patrick Shaughnessy said in a statement. “We extended our season and look forward to playing Thursday.”

The Red Storm finished the season with a record of 12-4. The Hornets will take on the Beekmantown Eagles in the Class B sectional title game on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles stunned the Champlain Valley Athletic Champions Peru Nighthawks, which finished the regular season with a 16-1 record, in the other semifinal game. Beekmantown won 6-5.
