SARANAC LAKE — A little over two weeks ago, the Saranac Lake Placid lacrosse team suffered its biggest loss of the season, falling to the Massena Raiders 13-2 on Massena’s home field. But when SLP hosted the Raiders on Wednesday, they got into the lead early and stayed in the lead throughout the game, claiming a 9-5 victory over the Raiders on the North Country Community College field.

“We’ve never beat a team like this. This is the best game ever,” SLP co-head coach Jeff Denkenberger said. “I’m almost speechless right now because I’m pumped and I’m excited for these girls.”

On a night to honor its seniors, SLP came through on all fronts after Sydney Lawrence, a senior, netted the first goal of the game.

“I mean it was on from there and they never let off the gas,” Denkenberger said.

SLP never gave up the lead and held to earn their 8th win of the season. The win also guaranteed SLP will finish with a .500 record or better season. The team is currently 8-7 overall.

Trailing by as many as five goals at one point, Massena eventually found some life late in the game when it scored back-to-back goals. SLP’s defense, however, was able to step up to seal the win.

“We didn’t panic, we played our game. These girls deserve that game more than anything,” Denkenberger said.

Tyler Burth led the way with five goals in the win. Lawrence, Addison Dann, Lizzie Harvey and Juliana Tremblay each netted one goal.

“Our girls, on the offensive end, finally got it together tonight,” Denkenberger said. “Between that and Sam (Cirikovic) having so many saves. Throughout the whole game, she had so many saves. Tyler in the first half was just scoring left and right. We took care of the ball better.”

Massena’s Harper Oakes paced her team with a pair of goals, while Lindsay D’Arienzo, Hailey LaShomb and Lena LaShomb recorded one goal each.

SLP wrapped up the regular season on Thursday against Ogdensburg Free Academy. While Wednesday’s contest was the final outing at home in the regular season for SLP, they could potentially host a playoff match.
