POTSDAM — The U.S. defeated Great Britain 18-0 in its men’s ice hockey preliminary round opener at the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games on Wednesday at Clarkson University’s Cheel Arena.

The United States struck early with forward Quinn Green slotting the puck home after an assist from Peter Morgan (1:16). Seven minutes later, the American power-play-unit converted the opportunity with a goal from Austin Master (8:46).

The fast start for U.S., continued with first period goals from Quinn Green (9:25), John Mulera (13:59), Matthew Hanewell (16:56) and Jack Jaunich (19:32).

“The biggest challenge is getting them ready, blending together, getting them all on the same page as fast as we can,” said United States head coach Mark Taylor.

The United States showed early signs of chemistry extending the lead to 12-0 in the second frame with goals from Emmet Powell (4:01), Brendan Mark (12:55), Luke Aquaro (14:56), a shorthanded second goal for Master (8:18) and two from Zachary Heintz (2:16, 11:16).

“Fifty-five saves or 64, I’m not a numbers guy, I just like to go out there and play hockey,” said British goaltender Joshua Crane. “These games are memorable… they are fun, that United States team is good and I wish them luck going forward.”

Thirty-seven seconds into the final period, forward Clark Kerner tapped the puck in for the US. The stars-and-stripes quickly tallied two more from second goals for Jaunich (4:29) and Aquaro (6:24). At this point, Great Britain removed Crane from net after 55 saves. Within 15 seconds of the goalie change, the US punched in another from Mulera (6:39). More late goals came from Sam Ruffin on a power play (8:13) and Mitch Walinski (9:39).

Wednesday’s attendance was 1,450, according to FISU organizers.
