LAKE PLACID — Guided by a big second half scoring surge, the Lake Placid boys basketball came away with a 49-32 win over the Willsboro Warriors at home Thursday night. The win was the fourth of the season for the Blue Bombers, who improved to 4-8 overall. Thursday’s victory also ended a three-game losing skid.

“It’s nice to get a win because our second half of the year is pretty tough,” Blue Bombers head coach Brian Brandes said. “But tonight was a step in the right direction.”

With just an eight point lead after halftime, Lake Placid caught fire in the third quarter, scoring 19 points while the Warriors could only muster up six. From then on the Bombers never fully let up to earn the win.

“We came out pretty hot, we scored three threes and that’s what we’ve been looking for,” Brandes said.

Lake Placid’s Seb Cecunjanin drained five three-pointers in the second half, while senior guard PJ Colby shot well from mid-range, recording all eight of his points after intermission.

Cecunjanin and Colby were two of the seven Blue Bombers who scored a basket on Thursday. Cecunajnin led the team with 24 points on six three-pointers and junior Talon Jordon cleaned up the inside with eight points. Owen Hayes hit one three-pointer in the first quarter while Chris Byrne, Foster Wood and Caleb Wylie each scored two points in the win.

The Blue Bomber took control of the game early by jumping out to an 11-0 run, before Willsboro’s Harvey Merrill, who finished with a team-high 24 points, made the team’s first and only basket of the opening quarter. Lake Placid then extended its lead with two baskets to make the score 15-2.

The Warriors clawed their way back into the game with a 10-5 run in the second quarter. Merrill scored eight points during that stretch, nailing one three pointer, while making all five of his free throw attempts to bring his team within range of the Blue Bombers.

“(Merrill’s) a very good player and we wanted to take him out,” Brandes said. “In the first quarter he did. The second quarter, the continuity wasn’t there on our team.”

Lake Placid held Merrill to four points in the third quarter, but he was able to pick it up in the fourth scoring 10 points to close out the game.

The Blue Bomber were slated to take on Crown Point on Friday. Following that game, the team will travel to Seton Catholic to take on the Knights on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
