USABS teams start season on high note

WHISTLER, British Columbia — The USA Bobsled and Skeleton teams kicked off the new season this past week in Canada for the North American Cup and in Lillehammer, Norway, at the Intercontinental Cup.

In the NAC Cup, Team USA’s Kaillie Humphries, a three-time gold medalist, snagged a first-place victory in women’s monobob on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Humphries won the race with a time of 1 minutes, 49.66 seconds. In two-man bobsled, Team USA’s Frankie Del Duca and Hakeem Abdul-Saboor earned fourth place overall in 1:43.99.

Del Duca competed again in two-man bobsled the following day. This time around, he was joined by Adrian Adams. The pair secured a second-place finish with a time of 1:43.99. In women’s monobob, Team USA’s Nicole Vogt placed fifth with a 1:52.86 finish, while fellow teammates Riley Compton took sixth in 1:56.48 and Lauren Brzozowski was seventh in 2:11.04.

In men’s skeleton, Team USA’s Austin Florian was crowned victorious on Friday, Nov. 11, earning first place with a time of 1:46.37. In women’s skeleton, Hallie Clarke also secured a win for Team USA with a time of 1:47.69.

Meanwhile in Lillehammer, Norway, at the Intercontinental Cup, Mystique Ro took first place in women’s skeleton for Team USA in 1:51.69. Team USA’s Daniel Barefoot came in eighth with a 1:47.60 time in men’s skeleton ICC division and teammate Hunter Willams was 13th in 1:48.41.

Florian finished in third place on Saturday, Nov. 12 with a 1:46.35 time, followed by his teammate Andrew Blaser in fifth-place in 1:47.28.

In the NAC women’s division, Clarke secured a third-place spot with a time of 1:48.9. Back over in Lillehammer, Barefoot placed fifth and Williams placed 16th, with 1:44.54 and 1:47.18 finishes respectively. In NAC four-man bobsled, Del Duca, Monteo Mitchell, Adams and Abdul-Saboor placed second with a 1:42.81 time.

In the second-women bobsled, Humphries and Emily Renna received a third-place title with a time of 1:46.68, while fellow teammates Compton and Jestena Mattson placed fifth with a 1:49.45 time.

The festivities came to a close on Nov. 13, with a second-place finish for four-man bobsled team of Del Duca, Mitchell, Adams and Abdul-Saboor in 1:43.03. In two-women bobsled, Compton and Macy Tarlton took fourth in 1:49.79.

Looking forward, Team USA will continue competing in Lillehammer for ICC Men’s Skeleton and Women’s Skeleton from Nov. 16 to 20. In the United States, the Para Bobsled World Cup will be held in Lake Placid on Nov. 19 as well as NAC two-man bobsled and women’s monobob in Park City, Utah also on Nov. 19.
