SARANAC LAKE — In a rematch of the Section VII Class C volleyball championship game, the Saranac Lake volleyball team claimed their second win of the season, defeating the Saranac Central Chiefs 3-1 on Tuesday.

The Red Storm, who have now won eight straight matches against the Chiefs, won at home by scores of 25-20, 25-8, 19-25 and 25-12.

Despite earning the win, Red Storm head coach Mike Navarra said the team still has a lot to improve on.

“I think that played consistently and I think that there is still room for growth on the team,” Navarra said. “Knowing their positions, knowing where to go. Serves are key. Serving and communication.

“I think they did well,” he added. “They played well and we got the win but they’ve got a long season and they’ve got a lot of room for work.”

After a competitive first set that saw, Saranac Lake edge out the Chiefs by just five points, the Red Storm turned up the intensity in the second to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

However, the momentum didn’t carry over into the third set.

After the two teams traded points back and forth, the match was tied up at 18-18, a string of great serves by Saranac and miscommunication on the Saranac Lake side of the court helped aid the Chiefs to a third-set victory.

In the fourth set after the two teams were squared at 11-11, Saranac Lake’s senior captain Malea White stepped up to serve. With White serving, the Red Storm went on a 10-1 run, before earning three more points to win the match.

White paced her team with a game-high 27 points while adding nine aces, eight kills and three digs. Azra Michael came through with 20 assists and nine points.

The Red Storm’s Anica Null and Emily Gay served up double-digit points. Gay had 13 points, while Null had 10. Null also recorded 10 kills in the game. Caterra Ratelle paced the team defensively with a five digs in the win.

With the win, the Red Storm improved to 2-1 on the season. The team will look to extend their record on the road against AuSable Valley today at 7 p.m.
