SARANAC LAKE — The drought is over.

For nearly four years, the Saranac Lake girls’ soccer team haven’t recorded a win. That all changed on Tuesday.

On a wet, rainy day, the Red Storm edged out the Ticonderoga Sentinels 1-0 on their home turf at Schroeter’s Field. The win marked the school’s first varsity girl soccer win since 2018.

“This is my third (season) and we hadn’t won, so this was really nice to get,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “The girls played super well.”

Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth, a freshman, scored the game’s only goal on a deflection after her teammate Lisa Wilson’s shot was blocked.

“(Burth) is stepping up in such a big way,” Wamsganz said. “She’s starting to see the field even better than she had. She’s feeling more comfortable and her teammates are understanding where they need to be for her to distribute the ball to them, which is a big plus.”

While the win improved Saranac Lake’s overall record to 1-2 on the season, Wamsganz doesn’t want his team to end the season with just one win.

“We’re a little banged up, so we’re going to have to deal with that over the next couple of days,” Wamsganz said. “All in all, I think they’ll come back with some energy Thursday. We don’t want their highs to get too high and their lows can’t get too low. We’ve got to budge through and make sure we’re doing our jobs.”

In what proved to be a defensive matchup, the Red Storm made some key adjustments toward the end of the game to ensure that they would leave their home field on top.

“It was kind of a gut check time at the end of the game for the last nine minutes,” Wamsganz said. “We had a conversation to try and just get the ball into the corners, take some time off the clock but still put some pressure on them and they did a good job of that, so that was a good thing.”

Saranac Lake’s senior goalkeeper, Karlie Goetz, shut down eight shots to earn her first career varsity shutout. Ticonderoga’s Keirra Bechard had five saves in net.

The Red Storm will look to net their second win of the season today on the road against Seton Catholic at 4:30 p.m.

“We’re playing pretty well right now,” Wamsganz said. “We have Seton on Thursday and that’ll be a tough one.”
