LAKE PLACID — Hundreds of runners will trek their way through the streets of Lake Placid for the Lake Placid Marathon and Half on Sunday, June 12 at 8 a.m.

Apart from the marathon returning to its normal spring date — the second Sunday in June — race owner and operator Greg Borzilleri said this year’s race will be pretty much identical to last year’s.

The marathon’s start line will be on Parkside Drive next to the Mirror Lake beach house once again, with the finish line on Station Street in front of Jewtraw Park. Borzilleri said there was a positive response to the finish line moved to Jewtraw Park last year.

“People seem to love it,” Borzilleri said. “Not only because it reduces congestion from up on Main Street and in town, but because the athletes don’t have to run up the hill at the end.”

Upon starting the race, runners will make their way down the village’s Main Street toward Mirror Lake Drive.

With the ongoing construction barriers on Main Street, Borzilleri said the Department of Public Works will push the construction to the side for the weekend.

“We’ll have that one lane and we are going to move some barrels off to the side for the race and put them back,” Borzilleri said. “It will be early on Sunday morning so it’s not that big of a deal and there isn’t a lot of traffic.”

Borzilleri added that Main Street was recently paved and he is especially excited to highlight the recent improvements to Main Street in the last two years.

“The sidewalks are open on both sides, I think we’ll be in good shape,” Borzilleri said. “There won’t be construction going on this weekend and Sunday morning from 8 in the morning for the race, and will be back open at 9 (a.m.) and we’ll be ready to roll.”

Runners will have a single lane to race down on Main Street, but Borzilleri expects that the runners will have enough room because the total number of participants is down from previous years.

“There is 900 something registered now,” Borzilleri said. “But 280 are deferrals from last year. Deferrals are always a tricky thing because we don’t know if they are going to show up. We haven’t had a lot of confirmation from those deferrals.”

Borzilleri expects around 800 people will take part in the two marathons on Sunday.

Once the runners have made their way past Main Street and around Mirror Lake, they will take a left to Morningside Drive before running down state Route 73 to River Road. While on River Road, the runners will reach a turnaround spot for either the half or full marathon before running towards Station Street.

From there, the half marathon runners will head toward the finish line while the full marathon runners turn around near Station Street on the first loop and go back to River Road for a second loop before heading to the finish line.
