Empire State Winter Games return in February

LAKE PLACID — The 43rd annual Empire State Winter Games will take place in Lake Placid from Feb. 2-5, 2023. Along with the return of the games, speedskating will also be brought back.

“This is the second year that the Adirondack Sports Council has been involved in the planning of the Empire State Winter Games and we are happy to announce the dates early, giving us ample time to prepare,” Adirondack Sports Council Executive Director Ashley Walden said in a statement. “The Empire State Winter Games is a great event for our local athletes and community, and we are excited to be able to continue this tradition.”

In addition to speedskating, this winter’s Games will include Alpine and Nordic skiing, Nordic combined, ski orienteering, ski jumping, snowboarding, freestyle skiing and freeski, bobsled, luge, skeleton, figure skating, ice hockey, snowshoeing and winter biking. The adaptive sports include Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, bobsled and sled hockey.

Last year, the Games returned following a one-year hiatus because of the pandemic. Some 1,600 athletes of all ages from New York and beyond participated in the ESWG’s 30 sports in Lake Placid.

Organizers said the ESWG is expected to bring in more than 5,000 individuals, and up to 15,000 additional spectators, according to the Adirondack Sports Council.
