SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake track and field teams returned back home on Thursday for a competitive meet against one of the top teams in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference this season.

The Red Storm boys edged out Saranac Central Chiefs 68-64 to stay undefeated, while the girls had a tougher night, falling to the Chiefs 104-28.

On the boys’ side, Saranac Lake took home 10 events to earn their fourth win of the season.

The Red Storm’s captain Gabe Wilson chalked up three individual event wins to pace his team on Thursday. Wilson, a senior, won the high jump, long jump and the 400-meter.

“Gabe has set the tone for our jumpers and sprinters and he has put our team on his back,” Saranac Lake boys coach Cy Ellsworth said. “That’s what you want out of your leader.”

Sophomore Soren Wolford was a triple winner as well, winning the 100-meter, 200-meter and the 4×100-meter relay, while Liam Nobles claimed a pair of individual wins. Nobles won the triple jump and the 4×100-meter relay with Wolford.

Saranac Lake’s Mitchell Ellsworth not only won the shot put contest, but also earned a personal record with a 50-foot, 2.5-inch throw.

Mia Sanford was the lone individual winner for the Red Storm girls. Sanford won the shot put contest with a 34′ throw — a personal record.

While the Saranac Lake girls’ team had just one individual win, the team had a few close finishes, including in the 4×400-meter relay.

“They are beginning to gain confidence and becoming more comfortable with workouts and technical components of their events,” Saranac Lake girls coach Jason Wamsganz said. “The last two meets, we have had a number of athletes become increasingly motivated and as coaches, it’s fun to watch. I fully anticipate the next half of the season to be very successful.”

The Red Storm girls fall to 2-2 on the season. Both track teams will travel to take on Seton Catholic in their next meet on Tuesday.
