Late surge lifts Red Storm batters

SARANAC LAKE — After dropping their last two games by double-digit scores, the Saranac Lake baseball team turned things around in a big way against the Saranac Central Chiefs on Friday. The Red Storm rallied in seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Saranac Central 8-2.

“What we saw in the sixth inning that’s what we are capable of doing,” Red Storm coach Bryan Munn said. “It kind of feels like the monkey is off our back a little bit. We strung some hits together and we’re feeling real good about it.”

Saranac Lake got on the board first when Cedar Rivers crossed home plate on an RBI single in the second inning. Despite scoring the first run, the bats quickly cooled down for the Red Storm, while their opponent, the Chiefs, managed to take the lead after scoring twice in the top of the third inning.

“We jumped out to a 1-0 lead and gave up a soft couple of runs on some infield hits,” Munn said. “It was frustrating not to be able to get some runs. I felt like our bats were there. We were making contact — I think we had one ball out of the infield — then we came alive.”

After both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, a sudden spark hit the Red Storm dugout, when six-straight batters reached base. The team then piled on seven runs to close out the game.

“We just pull them in and said, ‘boys we’re running out of time,'” Munn said. “‘We’ve got to keep with the plan — keep with the system — keep sticking the bats out there, they’re going to come.’ We knew they were going to come. That’s a deep lineup and they can hit.

“It was nice to see that finally happen,” he added. “It would’ve been really frustrating to walk out of here with a 2-1 loss.”

The Red Storm finished with 11 hits, including two doubles in a game that saw all nine batters reach base at least once. Saranac Lake’s Ben Clark, Landon Faubert, Brayden Munn, Nick Munn and Noah Munn had two hits each.

Brady Roberts had a solid outing on the mound for the Red Storm. Roberts pitched five and a half innings and struck out eight batters. Zyler Strack came in during the sixth inning and struck out two batters to earn the win in relief.

“They both pitched very well. Brady was on all night. A couple of long innings, where he got himself into some walk trouble and got his pitch count up. All in all, I thought he pitched great,” Munn said. “Zyler came in and basically closed the door. I was happy with our pitchers. I was ready to throw three or four and only had to throw two.”

Saranac Lake improved to 2-2 overall on the season with the victory. The team will play Beekmantown Central at home on Tuesday.
