High School Roundup: SLP girls laxers record first win

LAKE PLACID — After a rough start to the season, the Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team came ready to play against the Plattsburgh Hornets on the road Saturday. The team defeated the Hornets 14-5 to record their first win of the year.

SLP was led by their seniors Alex LaDue and Sydney Dann. LaDue scored six goals and had one assist, while Dann had four goals and three assists. Sophomore Phoebe Peer scored three goals for SLP, while Addison Dann chipped in one goal. Kaitlyn Yando had a stand-out game, recording an assist.

SLP played well defensively, and on the offensive side, the team was able to make good plays once they were able to settle down.

The girls are slated to have their home opener against Salmon River Central today at 5:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Lake Placid 17, Boquet Valley 6

The Lake Placid baseball team recorded their second win in a row, topping the Boquet Valley Griffins 17-6 at home on Friday.

The Blue Bombers had the bats rolling early, scoring nine total runs in the first three innings while giving up just one run.

With Lake Placid up 9-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Griffins scored five times on six hits to bring the game within three runs. The Bombers then answered with eight runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to pull away.

Lake Placid was led by Jon Caito, PJ Colby and Foster Wood, who recorded three hits each. Seniors JJ Ledwith and Sam Hooker also had a solid night offensively for the Blue Bombers. The pair had two hits each, including a double from both batters. The team finished the game with 15 hits.

Colby started the game on the mound and struck out eight batters. Lake Placid’s Katie Coursen came in during the fifth inning in relief to close out the game.

The Blue Bombers, who are now 2-2, are scheduled to play on the road today against Ticonderoga starting at 4:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Boquet Valley 12, Lake Placid 4

The Lake Placid softball team had the bats rolling late, but it wasn’t enough to take down the Boquet Valley Griffins, falling 12-4 at home on Friday.

Trailing 10-1, the Blue Bombers responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to tack any more on the rest of the way.

Lake Placid got a stellar performance at the plate from Hailey Buysse who went 2-for-4, with two singles. Senior Emma Adragna had a triple for the Blue Bombers.

Lake Placid’s Brooklyn Huffman struck out eight batters in five innings, while Danaya Patterson came in during the sixth inning and had three strikeouts.

The Blue Bombers move to 1-2 on the season. The team is scheduled to play at home on Wednesday against Wells at 4:30 p.m.

Beekmantown 3, Lake Placid 2

Beekmantown 5, Lake Placid 0

The Lake Placid tennis teams had a rough outing on Friday, with both teams falling to the Beekmantown Eagles.

The Blue Bomber boys, who played their match at home, had the closest match of the two teams, falling 3-2. Lake Placid’s number one singles player Sonja Toishi and Kenny Lawless, the number three singles player, were lone winners for the Blue Bombers.

Toishi defeated Bode Curilla, 6-0, 6-1, while Lawless took down Nate Sarnow in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Lake Placid’s Tristan Spotts was defeated, 6-2, 6-0 in his singles match-up and both Blue Bombers’ doubles teams fell in their matchups. The top doubles team of Harrison and Nash Carlisto fell 6-1, 6-1, while Owen Keal and Colden Damour lost, 6-1, 6-2.

The Lake Placid girls, who traveled to Beekmantown for their match, were defeated 5-0. The Blue Bombers’ Melanie Megliore — the number three singles player — put up a solid fight, but was ultimately defeated, 6-1, 6-1.

Both singles players, Reagan Levitt and Elsie Fitzsimmons fell by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores in their respective matches.

Lake Placid’s doubles team of Julia Crawford and Grace Ericson was topped 6-2, 6-0 and the second duo of Kiera Levitt and Maddison Tyler were defeated 6-3, 6-1.

Both Blue Bombers’ tennis teams now move to 2-1 on the season. The two teams will travel for their next match against Northeastern Clinton today at 4 p.m.
