Lake Placid girls claim CVAC team title

The Lake Placid girls cross country team showcased its dominance once again en route to taking the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference cross country championship crown at the Point Au Roche State Park in Clinton County on Saturday.

The Blue Bombers girls team placed three runners in the top six on the way to a team score of 35. The team was good enough to outscore runner-up Saranac with 40 points, Saranac Lake with 68 points, Ticonderoga with 106, Peru with 115, AuSable Valley with 192 and Beekmantown with 190.

Lake Placid’s Samantha Damico was the first girls runner to cross the finish line with a time of 19 minutes and 7.34 seconds. Saranac’s Sienna Boulds finished in second place with a time of 19:30.38.

Following behind was a pair of Blue Bomber runners: Annie Rose-McCandlish (20:55.90) in third place and Lilly Rother (21:02.64) in fourth. Kai Mckinnon (21:09.67) finished in sixth.

The Blue Bomber’s final point earner was Harley Cohen, who finished 23rd with a time of 23:02.77, sealing the win for the team.

Lake Placid, who had finished the regular season with the best record in the CVAC, finished the meet with an average time of 21:00.87.

The Red Storm girls team finished the meet in third place. The team was led by Megan Wilson. Wilson, who was the first Saranac Lake girl to finish, took eighth place overall with a time of 21:42.31.

Addison Ash (22:00.94) was the next Red Storm runner to finish. Ash finished in 11th place. Following behind were Phoebe Peer (22:14.95) and Zoe Carpenter (22:41.04). Peer finished in 16th place, while Carpenter took 19th. Saranac Lake’s last point earner, Brooklyn Shumway (22:44.46), finished in 21st place.

On the boys side, the Red Storm were defeated by the Peru Nighthawks by a score of 61-69, forcing the team to take second place overall.

Rounding out the top five teams were Plattsburgh with 121 points, Beekmantown with 131 and Saranac with 143. The Blue Bombers finished in sixth place out of the 11 teams competing with 157 points.

Taking the individual title was Saranac Lake’s Sam Ash with a time of 16:42.84. Seton’s Sam DeJordy (17:04.27) finished in second place while Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio (17:14.88) took third place.

With the top three finished, Peru managed to get two runners in before the Red Storm could their second finisher across the line. Peru’s Nikolas Recore (17:30.68) crossed the finish line to take fourth place and Elijah Lederman (18:14.92) took ninth.

The Blue Bombers were also able to get another runner in when Aidan Fay finished with a time of 18:04.83 in seventh place.

The second pointer earner, Aiden Hesseltine (18:17.46), finished in 10th place to give the Red Storm a shot at beating the Nighthawks — the Nighthawks were the only team that defeated the Red Storm all season.

After a Peru runner finished in 11th place, Saranac Lake’s Jake Kollmer (18:47.14) finished next in 15th place. The Red Storm’s Morgan Martin (18:53.56) finished in 18th place but was a few seconds behind Peru’s Luke Moffett (18:49.29) who finished in 17th place.

Two more Nighthawks crossed before Saranac Lake’s Sam Bickford (19:28.59) finished. Bickford took 25th place. With five Red Storm runners in the top 25, it still was not enough to edge out the Nighthawks.

The Lake Placid boys finished the race with Colin Francis (20:58.24) taking 48th overall, Will Hollander (21:01.36) in 49th and Alex Dawson-Ellis (22:16.07) in 59th out of the 90 runners in the race.

The cross country playoffs continue with the Section VII championships and NYSPHSAA state qualifiers at the Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown on Friday. The girls race will begin at 1:15 p.m, followed by the boys race at 2:15 p.m.
