LAKE PLACID — On a dark and rainy day Tuesday, the lone bright spot was the Lake Placid cross country runners.

The Blue Bombers cross country team kicked off its final meet of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 26 with a dominant display of running. Both the boys and girls teams collected wins over the Ticonderoga Sentinels and the Seton Catholic Knights.

“Everybody did wonderful. Conditions were definitely wet. I didn’t hear any complaints,” Lake Placid cross country Coach Mel Frazer said. “I think they did good, Andrew (Scanio) was top boys, Sam (Damico) was top girl. It’s a good way to end the season.”

On the girls’ side, the Blue Bombers didn’t appear to face any challenges running through the mud and the rain. The team’s top runners made up the entire top five on the way to a 15-50 victory over the Knights and a 15-42 victory over the Sentinels. The wins keep the girls at the top of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference standings.

Lake Placid’s Damico was the first to cross the finish line in the girls’ race with a time of 19 minutes and 5 seconds. Damico, an eighth grader, had the fourth fastest time overall.

After Damico, the Blue Bomber runners kept coming. Kai McKinnon (22:18) finished next to take second place followed by Annie Rose-McCandlish (22:23) in third. Harley Cohen (22:32) and Lily Rother (22:51) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

After the five Lake Placid runners finished, Seton Catholic’s first girls runner Faline Yang (23:18) crossed the finish line. Yang finished in sixth place. Ticonderoga’s Hannah Porter finished next with a time of 23:39.

Ellen Lansing (25:40) was the next Lake Placid runner to finish — she placed 11th. Lansing, along with Rose-McCandlish, were honored prior to the meet for their dedication to the program as a part of senior night.

Frazer said that both Rose-McCandlish and Lansing have been running cross-country for five years and the two are strong team captains, which has played a big part in the team’s success.

On the boys’ side, seniors Dan Kelleher, Max Flannigan and Will Hollander were honored. Flannigan was the only senior who was not able to run on Tuesday.

Frazer said the seniors have been running cross country for a long time. She added that Flannigan and Hollander had been running since seventh grade and putting in six years has been huge.

With Flannigan, a top runner, out of the race, the Blue Bombers were going to have to pull through to defeat Ticonderoga and Seton Catholic.

Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio ran through the mud to earn the fastest overall time of 17:41. Following Scanio was Ticonderoga’s Emery Tausinger (18:42) to take second place.

Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay crossed the finish line with a time of 18:45 to take third place. Seton Catholic’s Sam Dejordy (19:58) and Max Grafstein (19:59) finished within a second of each other to round out the top five.

The Sentinels and Blue Bombers traded points back and forth with Ticonderoga’s Carter Parent (20:36) taking seventh and Hollander (21:42) taking 10th place.

The Sentinel’s Alex Swagger (21:47) finished in 13th place and Lake Placid’s Colin Francis (22:15) took 14th place overall.

Needing just one runner to finish, Lake Placid’s Colton Kondrat (23:28) finished to take 16th overall. Kondrat’s finish pushed the Blue Bombers over the Sentinels by a score of 25-32. The team also defeated the Knights 21-40.

With the regular season now over, the two teams will shift their focus to playoffs. The teams travel to the Point Au Roche State Park in Clinton County for the CVAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30.

“We are going into this weekend strong, as well as all of the other teams, so it will be a fun weekend and a good postseason,” Frazer said. “I’m excited for the postseason so I’m ready for it to be here.”
