SARANAC LAKE — After winning 12 straight matches, the Red Storm are now 1-2 in their last three matches.

The team was defeated by the Peru Nighthawks 3-1 at home on Tuesday. The team lost by scores of 22-25, 25-19, 10-25 and 14-25.

“I think that attitudes have gotten ahold of our team,” Red Storm head coach Mike Navarra said. “The attitudes that I’m talking about is overconfident and thinking that they are unbeatable. That’s not a good mindsight for any player.”

The last time the two teams played was on Sept. 28 in a back-and-forth game that saw the Red Storm come out on top.

The match appeared like it was going to be back-and-forth again; the Red Storm lost the first set by just three points.

In the second set, Saranac Lake jumped to a lead and took control by winning the set and splitting the match at one a piece.

The third set is where the Red Storm fell apart.

“I think they did not play very well composed,” Navarra said. “I think they started off very strong, but one of the most important assets of the team is to be able to get their serves in and I feel like we did not get our serves in, unfortunately.”

Saranac Lake was only able to post 10 points in the third set, the lowest amount the team has put up all season long. The fourth set was much of the same as Peru dominated.

“I think we played a good consistent team in Peru. Peru did a good job in controlling the tempo,” Navarra said. “One of my strategies is to serve certain people on Peru and my team did not do that.

“Peru did exactly what they needed to do which was serve exactly where they needed to put the ball,” he added. “They were consistent and they made sure they were consistent.”

Peru was led by Rachel Madore and Mallory Martin. Madore had a match-high 22 assists along with 12 points, five digs, three aces and two kills. Martin finished the match with 17 points, 15 digs, six aces, three kills, three blocks and an assist.

Saranac Lake’s Mia Sanford played well upfront. Sanford had nine kills and two blocks. Anica Null and Azra Michael also had strong performances. Michael had a team-high 18 assists, while Null had eight points, seven digs, six kills and five aces in the loss.

The loss pushes the Red Storm to a 13-2 record. The team will look to bounce back in its final match of the season as it travels to take on Beekmantown today at 6 p.m.
