Surge split first two; Riverpigs get first win at home field in Tupper

LYON MOUNTAIN — The Saranac Lake Surge split games with the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds this weekend, winning on Saturday.

On opening day Saturday, the Surge defeated the Thunderbirds on the Thunderbirds’ home field in Lyon Mountain. With a score of 13-11, the Surge was able to win due to the team’s hot start. In the first four innings, the Surge was able to hang up six runs while keeping the Thunderbirds scoreless.

Plattsburgh battled back, putting 11 runs up in the second half of the game, including three in their final at-bats. However, the comeback fell short as the Surge continues to score as well.

The Surge had 14 hits, led by top prospects Corey Alexander II and Lennin Rodriguez, who each had two hits. Defensively, starting pitcher Albinson Volquez led the squad pitching five innings, striking out four, and only allowing four hits and a run.

In the second game of the weekend, the Surge was held scoreless as the Thunderbirds won 10-0 Sunday.

The Thunderbirds’ starting pitcher, Corey Howard, pitched all nine innings while only allowing two hits in the entire contest.

The two teams faced off again on Monday and will finish out the series on Tuesday. The Saranac Lake Surge will play its first home game on Thursday, June 24 at Petrova Field.

Riverpigs claim historic win

TUPPER LAKE — After losing in their home debut in Tupper Lake, the Riverpigs made history winning their first game at Municipal Park.

On Sunday the Riverpigs took on the New Hampshire Wild and won by the score of 7-2. The Wild took the lead early, being up 2-0 at the end of the second inning. However, the Riverpigs responded by keeping them scoreless for the final seven innings and scoring seven of their own.

The Riverpigs were led by Walner Espinal who went 2-4 at the plate hitting two home runs and batting in 4 RBIs.

The Riverpigs and Wild played again on Monday and will close their games out on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Municipal Park.
