SARANAC LAKE — With a heavy snowfall piling up on the trails and competitors from the start to the end of the race, the Saranac Lake boys and girls varsity Nordic teams swept Lake Placid in a meet held under the lights Monday at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center.

During a winter where the pandemic has dictated the season schedule, both Red Storm teams improved to 5-0 in meets exclusively held against the Blue Bombers.

Skiers raced on a 4.75-kilometer course, and the continuous dumping of snow made the evening memorable, challenging and fun.

“It was quite a night. The kids are going to remember this one,” Saranac Lake coach Keith Kogut said. “The visibility was pretty tough, especially on the downhills. I’m sure the kids who wore goggles were pretty happy that they had them.”

Adrian Hayden and Sophia Kelting both claimed individual victories for Saranac Lake. Hayden topped the boys field of a dozen competitors, finishing first in 14 minutes, 56 seconds. Red Storm teammate Colter Cheney-Seymour was runner-up in 15:42, and Andrew Scanio, the lone boy skiing for Lake Placid, placed third in 15:43. Owen Keal was fourth in 16:05 and Sam Ash rounded out the top five with a 16:14 result.

Kelting, a sophomore and one of the top high school Nordic skiers in New York, posted a winning time of 17:56 to improve her individual record to 5-0. Saranac Lake teammate Bella Wissler was second in 18:54, and Lake Placid’s Maya Garrison skied to a third-place result in 19:24. Saranac Lake’s Katie Samperi was fourth in 21:07 and the Blue Bombers Kai McKinnon finished fifth in 21:25.

The girls field featured 15 competitors, including 10 from Saranac Lake.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid will finish their season today when they battle it out on the racing trails at the Paul Smith’s College VIC.
